A paper clip is a small but useful thing. In general, a paper clip is used to stick sheets of paper together. But I ever used it in an uncommon way.

One day when I was operating my computer, the light went out. Unfortunately, my CD was still trapped in the CD-ROM drive. The CD belonged to my friend and I had to return it at that very moment. Suddenly, I saw a paper clip near my computer. Then I took it and made it straight. After that, I put the straight paper clip into the small hole on the CD-ROM drive. (Look at the picture below!) I gave a little pressure and then… Aha! I made it! The CD tray of the CD-ROM drive was open and I could take the CD out of the drive. Program aplikasi OpenOffice.org Impress (Presentation) memiliki fungsi yang sama seperti program aplikasi Microsoft PowerPoint pada sistem operasi Microsoft Windows. Untuk masuk ke program ini, kliklah Application – Office – OpenOffice.org Presentation. Setelah terbuka, program akan menampilkan wizard yang menanyakan apakah kita akan membuka presentasi yang masih kosong (empty presentation), apakah kita akan membuat presentasi dari template yang sudah ada (From Template), atau apakah kita akan membuka file presentasi yang sudah ada (Open Existing Presentation). Pada contoh ini saya memilih From Template, kemudian memilih Blue untuk presentation dan Subtle Accent untuk presentation background.

Pada bagian atas program aplikasi OpenOffice.org Impress (Presentation) ini terdapat menu-menu standar yang fungsi dan cara operasinya serupa dengan menu-menu pada Microsoft PowerPoint 2003. Adapun menu-menu tersebut adalah: File, Edit, View, Insert, Format, Tools, Slide Show, Window, dan Help. Bagi Anda yang sudah terbiasa membuat slide presentasi dengan Microsoft PowerPoint 2003, saya yakin Anda juga akan bisa membuat slide presentasi dengan OpenOffice.org Impress ini. Perhatikanlah gambar tampilan OpenOffice.org Impress yang saya jalankan pada sistem operasi Linux Ubuntu 8.04 ini!

Jika Anda perhatikan layar sebelah kanan, di situ terdapat sejumlah layout yang sudah disediakan dan dapat digunakan sesuai dengan kebutuhan. Beberapa contoh layout tersebut adalah:

Title, Text : terdiri dari judul dan teks isi
Title, Chart : terdiri dari judul dan grafik
Title, Spreadsheet : terdiri dari judul dan lembar kerja atau tabel
Title, ClipArt, Text : terdiri dari judul, gambar, dan teks isi
Title, Chart, Text : terdiri dari judul, grafik, dan teks isi

Dalam contoh yang terlihat pada gambar di atas, saya menggunakan layout Title, ClipArt, Text.

Selain layout, di layar sebelah kanan juga terdapat Custom Animation untuk memberikan berbagai efek animasi dan Slide Transition untuk mengatur tampilan peralihan slide.

Pada saat menyimpan file, OpenOffice.org Impress akan menyimpannya dengan ekstensi .odp (OpenDocument Presentation). Agar file yang telah Anda buat itu kompatibel dan bisa dibuka pada program aplikasi Microsoft PowerPoint, sebaiknya pada saat menyimpan, Anda ubah terlebih dahulu file type-nya menjadi Microsoft PowerPoint 97/2000/XP (ppt).

Pada bagian terdahulu saya sudah membahas mengenai program aplikasi OpenOffice.org Writer (Word Processor). Pada Bagian Keempat ini kita akan melihat sekilas mengenai OpenOffice.org Calc (Spreadsheets).

Saya yakin Anda sudah sangat akrab dengan program aplikasi Microsoft Excel yang berjalan di bawah platform sistem operasi Microsoft Windows. Pada sistem operasi Linux Ubuntu 8.04 ini digunakanlah program aplikasi OpenOffice.org Calc (Spreadsheets). Tampilan program ini mirip sekali dengan tampilan Microsoft Excel 2000/XP/2003, begitu juga dengan fungsi-fungsi dan cara pengoperasiannya. Jadi tidak perlu saya bahas panjang lebar mengenai hal tersebut.

Untuk masuk ke program aplikasi OpenOffice.org Calc, klik Application – Office – OpenOffice.org Spreadsheets. Lihatlah tampilannya! Sangat mirip dengan Microsoft Excel, bukan? Pada bagian atas terdapat beberapa menu (File, Edit, View, Insert, Format, Tools, Data, Window, Help) yang juga terdapat pada Microsoft Excel 2000/XP/2003. Jadi Anda tidak perlu khawatir! Kalau Anda bisa mengoperasikan Microsoft Excel, Anda juga akan bisa mengoperasikan OpenOffice.org Calc. Pada OpenOffice.org Calc ini Anda dapat menggunakan rumus, fungsi, membuat chart, melakukan penyaringan database, dan masih banyak hal lainnya. Namun, pada saat penyimpanan file, Anda harus lebih cermat sebab, secara default, OpenOffice.org Calc akan menyimpan file Anda dalam format atau ekstensi .ods (OpenDocument Spreadsheets). Kalau dalam Sistem Operasi Microsoft Windows kita mengenal program aplikasi Microsoft Office, maka dalam Sistem Operasi Linux Ubuntu 8.04 ini digunakan program aplikasi OpenOffice.org versi 2.4. Saya sudah mengenal OpenOffice.org beberapa tahun lalu. Waktu itu saya menggunakan Linux Knoppix yang menyertakan program aplikasi OpenOffice.org versi 1.x.

Pengoperasian OpenOffice.org ini sangat mudah karena antarmukanya mirip dengan Microsoft Office 2000/XP/2003. Jadi, Anda tidak perlu khawatir akan menghadapi banyak kesulitan saat bekerja dengan OpenOffice.org. Sebagai perbandingan, kalau pada Microsoft Office kita kenal Microsoft Office Word, maka pada OpenOffice.org kita menggunakan OpenOffice.org Word Processor (Writer). Untuk program aplikasi setara Microsoft Excel, kita menggunakan OpenOffice.org Spreadsheets. Sedangkan untuk Microsoft PowerPoint, kita menggunakan OpenOffice.org Presentation.

OpenOffice.org Word Processor (Writer)

Seperti yang sudah saya jelaskan di atas, OpenOffice.org Word Processor (Writer) bisa disetarakan dengan Microsoft Office Word pada Sistem Operasi Microsoft Windows. Cara kerjanya pun sama. Anda pasti sudah akrab bukan dengan menu-menu tersebut dalam Microsoft Word? Namun ada satu hal yang perlu Anda perhatikan. Pada saat menyimpan file pertama kali, jika Anda menggunakan sistem penyimpanan default, maka file Anda akan disimpan dalam format atau ekstensi .odt (OpenDocument Text). Pada Linux Ubuntu 8.04 ini, task bar terletak di sebelah atas layar. Pada bagian sebelah kanan terdapat tombol Shut Down dan beberapa informasi mengenai jam sistem, jenis koneksi, dll. yang mirip dengan system tray pada sistem operasi Windows. Pada bagian sebelah kiri terdapat beberapa tombol, yaitu Application, Places, dan System. Namun yang akan dibahas di sini adalah Application dan System.

Secara default, Application terdiri dari beberapa menu, yaitu Accessories (Calculator, Text Editor, Take Screenshot, dll), Games (Mahjongg, Gnometris, Chess, dll), Graphics (GIMP Image Editor, F-Spot Photo Manager, dll), Internet (Firefox Web Browser, Pidgin Internet Messenger, dll), Office (OpenOffice.org Word Processor, dll), Sound & Video (Movie Player, Rhythmbox Music Player, dll), dan Add/Remove. Untuk menghapus atau menambah menu-menu pada Application ini cukup lakukan klik pada tombol System – Preferences – Main Menu. Di situ terdapat beberapa menu lain yang dapat Anda pilih sesuai kebutuhan.

Pada bagian System terdapat sejumlah informasi berkenaan dengan hardware komputer. Di sini kita bisa melakukan berbagai konfigurasi terhadap sistem komputer. Salah satu menu yang terdapat pada bagian System ini adalah Partition Editor. Anda dapat masuk ke sini dengan mengklik System – Administration – Partition Editor. Setelah saya pelajari lebih lanjut, Partition Editor ini ternyata memiliki fungsi yang sama seperti Partition Magic pada sistem operasi Windows. Partisi pada hard disk bisa dibuat, dihapus, atau diubah ukurannya dengan mudah dan cepat. Pada bagian System ini juga Anda bisa melakukan pengaturan terhadap desktop komputer, misalnya mengaktifkan screensaver. Sistem Operasi Linux makin digemari oleh para pencinta komputer. Semakin banyak distro Linux yang sudah beredar dan digunakan, seperti Mandrake (Mandriva), RedHat, Suse, PCLinux, dan Ubuntu. Yang akan dibahas pada postingan kali ini adalah Linux Ubuntu versi 8.04.

Kata "Ubuntu" berasal dari Afrika yang berarti "humanity to others". Linux Ubuntu adalah salah satu distro Linux yang akhir-akhir ini banyak dipakai karena GUI (Graphical User Interface)-nya yang user-friendly dan fasilitasnya yang tidak mengecewakan. Saya mencoba menjalankan Linux Ubuntu 8.04 ini secara live CD menggunakan laptop Toshiba dengan prosesor dual core, RAM 1.5 GB dan hard disk 120 GB. Live CD di sini maksudnya adalah saya menjalankan sistem operasi Linux Ubuntu 8.04 tanpa menginstalnya ke dalam hard disk komputer, tetapi cukup menjalankanya melalui CD.

Untuk menjalankan Linux Ubuntu 8.04 Live CD, ubahlah prioritas booting di BIOS komputer Anda ke CD/DVD. Atau, jika PC atau laptop Anda mempunyai fasilitas Boot Menu, masuk saja ke situ dan langsung pilih CD/DVD pada saat mau booting. Setelah beberapa detik, sistem operasi Linux pun berhasil dijalankan secara mulus. Desktop dengan tampilan dominan warna coklat muda yang indah dan sejuk menghiasi layar. Control Panel merupakan salah satu elemen dari sistem operasi Windows yang sangat penting karena di sinilah kita bisa melakukan perubahan-perubahan atau konfigurasi-konfigurasi.

Untuk menyembunyikan Control Panel dari menu Start, lakukanlah langkah-langkah di bawah ini:

Klik Start - Run.
Ketikkan "regedit". (Tanda petik jangan diketik!)
Masuklah ke HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer.

Fungsi Tombol FN

Pada keyboard (terutama keyboard notebook) terdapat sebuah tombol yang bertuliskan FN. Masih banyak pengguna komputer yang bingung dengan penggunaan tombol ini.

Sebenarnya tombol ini bisa digunakan untuk mengaktifkan fungsi-fungsi tertentu. Jika Anda perhatikan notebook atau laptop Anda, di situ terdapat beberapa gambar kecil di pojok beberapa tombol. Misalnya, pada laptop Toshiba L200 ada gambar kecil yang terdapat di pojok kanan bawah tombol F11. Fungsinya adalah untuk mengaktifkan Numlock. Nah, untuk mengaktifkan Numlock, tekan dan tahan tombol FN lalu tekan tombol F11 tersebut. Hasilnya... Fungsi Numlock akan segera aktif. Sebagai contoh lain, pada laptop Acer terdapat gambar kecil untuk mengaktifkan sound (membesarkan atau mengecilkan volume). Cara mengaktifkannya adalah tekanlah tombol FN dan diikuti dengan menekan tombol sound tersebut, apakah mau membesarkan atau mengecilkan volume, terserah Anda.

Cara Menonaktifkan System Restore

Membatalkan AutoCorrect

Sebagai contoh, jika Anda sedang bekerja dengan teks berbahasa Indonesia, dan Anda hendak mengetikkan kata teh, maka komputer akan secara otomatis menggantinya dengan kata the. Tindakan komputer ini bisa sangat menjengkelkan.

Lantas, bagaimana cara mengatasinya? Ada beberapa cara yang bisa Anda lakukan. Namun, di sini saya hanya akan memberikan satu cara saja yang sangat efektif dan efisien. Oke... coba ketikkan

Mengganti Huruf pada Drive

Tahap III (Setting koneksi internet):

1. Klik Start – Control Panel.

2. Klik ganda Network Connection

3. Klik Create a new connection.

4. Pada jendela New Connection Wizard, klik Next.

5. Pilih Connect to the internet dan klik Next.

6. Pilih Set up my connection manually dan klik Next.

7. Karena kita akan menggunakan HP CDMA, maka kita pilih Connect using a dial-up modem dan klik Next.

8. Isilah nama koneksi pada ISP Name sesuai keinginan Anda, misalnya INTERNET CDMA.

9. Pada nomor telpon ISP, isikan #777. Nomor ini bisa digunakan untuk Flexi, StarOne, maupun Fren.

10. Klik Next.

11. Untuk User name dan password tergantung pada penyedia layanan yang Anda gunakan. Jika Anda menggunakan Flexi, ketikkan “telkomnet@flexi” pada user name dan “telkom” pada password. Jika Anda menggunakan StarOne, ketikkan “starone” pada user name dan “indosat” pada password. Dan jika Anda menggunakan Fren, ketikkan “m8” baik pada user name maupun pada password.

12. Klik Next.

13. Beri tanda centang pada Add a shortcut to this connection on my desktop agar kita memiliki icon shortcut pada desktop komputer untuk memudahkan koneksi di waktu-waktu yang akan datang.

14. Klik Finish.

Jika semua tahapan di atas dilakukan dengan benar, maka Anda sudah dapat melakukan koneksi dengan menggunakan HP CDMA Anda. Caranya klik ganda ikon koneksi internet yang sudah Anda buat dan klik Dial. Tunggu beberapa saat hingga muncul pesan pada system tray bahwa komputer Anda sudah terhubung ke internet.

Setelah terhubung ke internet Anda bisa browsing dengan menggunakan program bawaan Windows yaitu Internet Explorer. Atau, jika Anda ingin menggunakan browser lain seperti Mozilla Firefox atau Opera, Anda bisa menginstalnya terlebih dahulu ke dalam sistem komputer Anda.

4. Pilih Have disk kalau driver modem tersebut tidak/belum tercantum pada daftar.

5. Anda browse lokasi tempat penyimpanan file driver modem CDMA. (Jika Anda tidak memiliki driver ini, Anda dapat men-download-nya melalui internet sesuai dengan merek HP yang digunakan. Untuk driver modem CDMA Nokia bisa di-download dari: www.nokia-asia.com atau www.nokiausa.com/phones/software/)

6. Klik OK.

7. Untuk contoh di bawah ini, karena menggunakan HP CDMA Nokia, maka kita pilih Nokia CDMA2000 1X 3G Packet Data Modem, lalu klik Next.

8. Karena kabel data terpasang pada COM6 (Lihat uraian pada Koneksi Internet dengan HP CDMA Bagian 1!), maka pada saat instalasi modem kita juga memilih COM6, lalu klik Next.

9. Klik Continue Anyway.

10. Klik Finish. Jika kita masuk ke jendela Phone & Modem Options, kita akan melihat adanya modem baru yang sudah kita instal.

Dalam postingan yang lalu saya sudah membahas tentang koneksi internet dengan telpon rumah. Kali ini saya akan membahas koneksi internet dengan menggunakan HP CDMA. Untuk itu, Anda perlu memiliki HP CDMA yang telah dilengkapi dengan modem, seperti Nokia 2116, Nokia 6585, atau seri lain yang lebih baru.

Ada beberapa tahapan yang harus dilalui. Ikutilah tahapan-tahapan berikut ini:

Tahap I (Instalasi Kabel Data):

1. Installah driver kabel data/bluetooth/infrared, tergantung jenis media apa yang Anda gunakan untuk menghubungkan HP dengan komputer. Dalam contoh praktek ini kita akan menggunakan kabel data sebagai penghubung (Jenis kabel data tergantung pada merk dan tipe HP yang digunakan. Ada yang menggunakan kabel DKU-2, DKU-5, CA-42, CA-43, dan lain sebagainya. Untuk mengetahuinya, Anda bisa membaca buku manual yang disertakan pada saat membeli HP). Bagi Anda yang menggunakan bluetooth atau infrared, Anda tidak perlu khawatir karena prinsip kerja dan proses instalasinya sama saja.

2. Setelah driver terinstal, coba Anda cek pada Device Manager port COM yang digunakan oleh kabel data tersebut. (Untuk masuk ke Device Manager, klik kanan My Computer, pilih Properties, pilih Hardware, dan klik Device Manager.) Ingatlah Port COM yang digunakan tersebut karena hal ini akan berguna saat instalasi modem pada tahapan selanjutnya. Misalnya, pada contoh ini Port yang digunakan adalah COM6.

Bagi Anda yang memiliki telpon rumah dan ingin menggunakan internet di rumah sehingga tidak perlu repot-repot lagi pergi ke cafe internet, Anda dapat membuat koneksi internet dengan telpon rumah. Caranya? Lakukanlah langkah-langkah di bawah ini (diasumsikan bahwa modem beserta driver-nya sudah terinstal pada komputer Anda):

Klik Start – Control Panel.
Klik ganda Network Connection
Pilih Create a new connection.

Windows memiliki program bawaan yang bernama ping.exe. Program ini dapat digunakan untuk melihat seberapa cepat koneksi komputer dengan server suatu website dan sekaligus untuk mengetahui alamat IP-nya.

Untuk menggunakan program ini, lakukanlah langkah-langkah berikut:

Koneksikan komputer Anda dengan internet dan bukalah sebuah website, misalnya www.yahoo.com.
Klik Start – All Programs- Accessories – Command Prompt.
Ketikkan “ping www.yahoo.com” pada jendela Command Prompt. (Tanda petik tidak perlu diketik.)
Tekan Enter.

Sesaat kemudian akan muncul tulisan-tulisan yang berisi informasi mengenai alamat IP server dan juga kecepatan koneksi dengan server tersebut.

Cara Menghilangkan Balloon Tips

Anda mungkin sering merasa kesal atau sebel karena balloon tips yang sering muncul di system tray. Sebenarnya tujuannya sih baik, yaitu untuk mengingatkan pengguna komputer. Tapi karena frekuensi kemunculannya yang terlalu sering, balloon tips tersebut justru mengganggu aktivitas kita. Balloon tips biasanya muncul untuk memperingatkan bahwa antivirus perlu di-update, adanya koneksi internet, atau hal-hal lain yang dianggap Windows sangat penting.

Bagi Anda yang tidak suka dengan kehadiran balloon tips ini bisa menghilangkannya dengan cara sebagai berikut:

Klik Start - Run.
Ketik "regedit". (Tanda petik tidak diketik!)
Masuklah ke KEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced.
Pada jendela sebelah kanan lakukan klik kanan mouse dan pilih New - DWORD Value.
Ketikkan nama value "EnableBalloonTips". (Tanda petik tidak diketik! Perhatikan juga cara pengetikan value tersebut. Jangan sampai salah!)
Tekan Enter.
Klik kanan value yang baru dibuat tersebut.
Klik Modify.
Pada Data Value ketikkan angka 0 untuk menghilangkan Balloon Tips.
Klik OK.
Tutup jendela Registry Editor dan Restart komputer Anda.

Easy Way to Remove Links in Ms-Word

Browsing is an interesting activity. Sometimes, when we find a good article, we will copy the text and paste it to Ms-Word document. The problem is, if the article contains some links, the links will also be copied.

If you don't like or don't need those links, you can remove them. Please follow these steps:

Highlight the whole text with your mouse. (Or, you can also press CTRL+A.)
Press the combination of CTRL+Shift+F9. (Remember! You must press these three keys simultaneously.)

Now you can see that all the links in your Ms-Word document has been removed.

Tips for Writing CDs

The following tips can help you avoid errors when writing to CDs. Common errors include interrupting the flow of data to the CD recorder or running out of available disk space for the CD recording process.

When creating a CD, the CD recorder must receive a constant flow of data from the hard disk. If the flow of data is interrupted, the CD continues to spin but the writing laser does not have any information to copy onto the disc. When this happens, the writing process stops and you end up with a useless CD.

You can do the following to maintain a constant flow of data:

Try recording at a lower write speed.
Close all other programs.
Disable any screen savers that might begin during writing.
Defragment your hard disk before writing a CD.
Make sure that the CD and the CD recorder are clean and dust free.
If the CDs from one manufacturer keep failing, try a different brand.

Mengakses Situs dari Run

Biasanya saat ingin masuk ke suatu situs, kita mengetikkan alamat situs yang dituju pada address bar browser. Namun, ada cara lain yang bisa kita lakukan, yaitu melalui menu Run. Caranya adalah sebagai berikut:

Klik Start - Run.
Ketikkan alamat situs yang akan dibuka, misalnya www.google.com atau http://free-english-lesson.blogspot.com, atau URL lainnya yang Anda inginkan.
Ketik Enter atau klik tombol OK.

Tips Merawat Baterai Notebook

Notebook kini telah menjadi pilihan utama untuk membantu berbagai kegiatan sehari-hari banyak orang. Namun tak semua pemilik ataupun pengguna notebook tahu bagaimana memperlakukan notebook dan baterainya dengan baik dan benar.

Komisi Keamanan Produk Konsumen Amerika mencatat setidaknya tak kurang dari 47 kasus notebook yang berasap atau terbakar, sejak Januari 2001 hingga Agustus 2006 (detikINET).

Berikut ini beberapa tips agar baterai Anda awet dan mobilitas tetap lancar:

Jangan gunakan baterai atau charger notebook yang tidak kompatibel. Jika tidak yakin dengan kompatibilitas baterai pengganti ataupun charger yang digunakan, hubungi bagian layanan dari produsen notebook terkait.
Baterai notebook dapat menjadi panas dalam pemakaian normal sekalipun. Jangan gunakan notebook sambil diletakkan di pangkuan Anda.
Ketika menggunakan notebook, hindari meletakkan notebook pada permukaan yang lunak atau lembut, semisal pada sofa, tempat tidur atau karpet. Sebab permukaan seperti itu akan menghambat aliran udara di bagian bawah notebook dan dapat menimbulkan overheating.
Cegah terjadinya kontak pada dudukan baterai yang longgar dengan berbagai jenis objek terbuat dari metal, seperti penjepit kertas, koin tipis, dan sebagainya.
Baterai notebook, termasuk notebook itu sendiri tentunya, jangan sampai terjadi tekanan yang berlebihan yang diakibatkan karena terjatuh, terbentur, terhimpit ataupun tertumpuk oleh benda berat di atasnya. Hal tersebut akan mengakibatkan sirkuit dalam baterai menjadi rentan terjadi hubungan arus pendek (korslet) yang kemudian mengakibatkan overheating.
Jangan letakkan notebook di tempat yang dapat menjadi sangat panas, semisal di bawah terik matahari ataupun di dalam mobil yang diparkir cukup lama di tempat terbuka saat siang hari.
Menjadi basah atau terkena air adalah hal yang harus dihindari dari notebook ataupun baterainya. Meskipun nantinya akan mongering secara perlahan akan berkarat dan membuat rentan keselamatan penggunanya.
Pastikan Anda memahami cara menggunakannya, menyimpan, dan men-charge baterai dan notebook yang telah tertulis di dalam buku manual.
Disarankan tidak men-charge baterai terus-menerus ketika baterai telah terisi full.
